Things To Know When Upgrading Hard Drives

By Patricia Connor

If you ask any PC user what component they would most like to upgrade on their computer, they would probably tell you they would love to switch hard drives. Installing a new internal drive is a very easy type of upgrade, and one which is often performed by the user on their own. Most computers come with documentation which easily spells out the correct way to replace the internal drive.

The two most important things to consider when purchasing a new drive is your needs as a user, and the technical aspects of the computer. You cannot just grab any hard drive and put it in your computer, as there are different types. You also have to decide whether or not you want a higher capacity drive. Given the opportunity, most users will opt to get a bigger drive.

There are several reasons why a user may want to upgrade their hard disk. Digital photographers are notorious for using a lot of disk space on their computer. Digital photos which are high resolution can be several megabytes in size which makes them take up a lot of space. The average digital photographer may have a few thousand photos on their hard disk at one time. This makes a hard disk fill up fairly quickly.

Hard core music lovers are also known for their crowded hard disk. Music lovers have been known to collect every song they come across, and use a lot of disk space in doing so. After the hard disk is filled with their favorite tunes, they can switch out the songs at any time they wish into their MP3 player.

If most computer users were to tell you honestly, they would say they have no clue what type of components are inside their machine. For this reason, the majority of the population will have a third party fix their computer, and handle all upgrades. For the DIY types, this is not an option, even if they are not sure what component they need.

If you fall into this category, do not feel alone. You are in the majority, and rest assured you do not have to know everything about a computer to use one. Most personal computers come with a component list which is a sticker mounted on the inside or the bottom of the computer. It will list all of the information about your hard disk on the sticker.

Your best recourse is to let the electronics guru know what you need, and let them give you the part which you require. In this manner you will be able to simply tell them you want a bigger drive than what is previously in your computer. If you do it this way you can switch hard drives with absolutely no error on your part. - 22787
