How Secure Is The Combination Lock Box

By Danny Ricks

Are you an owner of a valuable property that you want to keep safe and away from unwanted access? With the help modern security, different products are now manufactured to help individuals and companies to secure their properties. Most of these security items have also evolved from simple to the most complex devices mainly due to the attempts of many hackers to crack the security systems.

Combination lock boxes are boxes made of a combination of different materials such as plastic, metal, glass and fiber. These are made to be very sturdy, fire-proof, rust-proof and as a lot of the manufacturers claim, hack-proof. These boxes require a code of some sort before it can be opened by an individual. It is usually a combination of numbers, letters or both. Some lock boxes use other different codes to make cracking it more complex. Unlike the older lock boxes that use dials, the modern ones are mostly electronic.

Most of these lock boxes are used to store important documents such as wills, passports, certificates and many more. Others also house money, keys, security cards, firearms and jewelry. Many people use combination lock boxes because of its reliability but there is really no absolute assurance that a lock box is totally hack-proof so it is still recommended to use other means of security such as movement detection and alarms.

Modern security lock boxes have more intricate design and framework. The combination code alone can be very difficult to crack depending on the complexity of the system as designed by the manufacturer. It may also depend on the code that was chosen by the owner of the lock box. Simple codes such as birthdates, license number or other numbers that can be easily attributed to the owner can also be easily cracked. However, there are also ways in which hackers may be able to break the system such as by using autodialers which guess the code based on a number of different combinations.

Another way hackers use to try to break into a lock box is by inflicting physical damage. A small hole is drilled into a certain spot where they can insert a camera to view the lock mechanism and try to crack or bypass it. However, some lock boxes have added security for this kind of cracking attempt. Another lock is placed inside that will be triggered by high risk activities such as brute force. Thus more hackers prefer to crack the boxes more carefully.

Combination lock boxes are a way for many people to store their prized possessions. They are very effective and dependable. Although there are continuous attempts to beat the system of combination lock boxes, manufacturers also continuously devise ways to counter them and still provide the security that many people and companies need. This cycle makes the once simple lock box to become a more and more secure item as new features are added to them. - 22787
