McAfee software shields against cybercrime

By Matthew Kerridge

It's one of the worst feelings: You start up your computer, and you realize that something is wrong. Really wrong. You've been attacked by a computer virus. That's exactly the kind of situation that McAfee software is designed to stop before it happens.

Unfortunately, that wonderful world of cyberspace also has criminals and predators who create malicious software that can damage your computer and set up websites with content that's inappropriate for children and teen-agers. That's why McAfee developed its Family Protection software. The company, located in Santa Clara, California, was founded in'89 for the purpose of protecting computers against malicious software known as viruses. Since the development of the World Wide Web in the early'90s, the Internet has become a place where virtually all the knowledge of the planet can be accessed with a few keystrokes.

This McAfee software was designed to shield children of all ages from inappropriate content, the risks of social networking, contact with strangers, and other online threats. The software enables parents to set up controls that can monitor potential cyberbullying, restrict children's access to objectionable videos on YouTube and discipline the amount of time children spend online. McAfee's Family Protection software can perform such functions as :

McAfee cites several scams that can't be entirely averted even by the best anti-virus and security software. These include bogus charitable requests, "phishing" emails designed to entice people into revealing personal financial data, viruses and worms attached to holiday e-cards and slide shows, and online identity theft that occurs while shopping on the Internet. The cardinal rule for any computer user is: If there are any doubts about any web site, email, instant message or other online communication, don't open it!

Founded in'89, McAfee produces the biggest variety of security software intended for users with different levels of computer system complexity. As with its "12 Scams of Christmas" alert, McAfee also promotes ongoing security efforts to head off cybercriminals before they damage computers and bank accounts.

The company also warned that email attachments containing holiday-themed slide shows are also popular ways for cybercriminals to access personal data stored in computers.

* Keep the family's personal computer PC safe from security invasions found when files are shared peer-to-peer, and give parents a full view of their children's Internet and IM activity in order to teach youngsters appropriate online behavior.

The software produced by McAfee comes backed by its anti-virus research organization known as McAfee AVERT. By tracking, reporting on and writing software to counteract the latest in malicious software, McAfee helps to keep the global computer network safer for consumers and businesses.

With these kinds of controls, parents can have more confidence in allowing their children to use the Internet for school studies, games, social networking and other pastimes. Teaching children how to use the Internet responsibly can be one of the best life skills parents can pass on in today's world. Backed by its global AVERT threat assessment lab, McAfee software provides the kind of always-on-guard security that can relieve some of the worry in Internet safety. McAfee software sets the worldwide standard for home or business computer safety excellence. - 22787
