What's Up With Netbooks?

By Alberto Domingo

Most people who have heard the term Netbook is always curious to know what exactly a Netbook is.

The answer can be summarized into pretty much one sentence. A netbook is a thin, lightweight, super portable laptop computer that has a screen size of 10 inches or less and operates on a very low power processor.

A netbook is a great solution for a certain type of individual. You should do your research to see if a netbook is right for you. Here are the specs on the average netbook.

Processors: Today, most netbooks run on an Intel Atom chip. Some run on a processor that was released by Via, but they are not nearly as powerful as the Atom chip. Because the majority of netbooks are running on the exact same processor, you need to take a good look at the different brands and models to see exactly what sets each of them apart.

Battery Size: Most of the netbooks on the market are equipped with a 3 or 4 cell battery. Lately, consumers have been pushing rather hard to get a netbook with a larger size battery. Because of this, we are slowly starting to see netbooks that are being sold with 6 cell batteries preinstalled. The larger batteries do ad some bulk to the system, so if you want the smallest computer possible, I would stick with the smaller battery.

Screen Size: About 95% of all netbooks have a screen size of ten inches or less. Pushing the boundaries that separate netbooks and laptops, some of the newer netbooks are selling with twelve inch screens.

Storage: Almost all of the netbooks that are being sold in 2009 are coming equipped with 2.5", 5400 RPM SATA drive.

Keyboard: The earliest versions of netbooks came with super small, cramped keyboards. This was simply because the device was very small itself. Because of this, most people didn't even consider a netbook as an option for full day computing. However today, most netbooks have pretty good sized keyboards, around 92% of the size of a normal keyboard.

Wrap Up: Despite what people may be saying, netbooks are most likely here to stay. They are top sellers on Amazon and the perfect solution for anyone wanting a smaller, lighter alternative to a full size laptop. - 22787
