Dell P1500 - The Able Home Office Printer

By Ben Pate

Dell, one of the most trusted names in the desktop and laptop manufacturing space, has successfully forayed into printer production. The Dell P1500 printer is one of the most user friendly and efficient printers in its class, with sharply detailed prints professionally output using P1500 compatible toner.

To begin at the very beginning, it will take no more than five minutes for anyone to install the machine. Parallel and USB ports hook up the device on a network. USB ports offer faster and easier processing. This device is not compatible with the Mac OS and supports only Windows OS staring with Windows 98 and later versions. This black and white printer offers resolution of 600 x 600 dpi while the input tray is suitable for use with various kinds of paper sizes including envelopes, transparencies and A4 papers.

The input paper tray supports various kinds of material starting from A4 papers to envelopes and transparencies and can hold up to 150 pages. If someone requires heavy duty printing jobs be done, Dell sells an extra input tray that can store 250 pages. For personal and small business usages the product is very efficient. At an output rate of 14.7 pages per minute, the Dell P1500 printer is at least 25% ahead of the nearest competitor in the same class. Priced sensibly, it is very reasonable when compared with other products in the same category.

The printer weighs a measly 20 lbs and with dimensions as compact as 14 x 15 x 9 inches, the form factor is well taken care of. Dell technical support is readily available and an extra 48-month warranty can be bought for extra protection.

The printer has 16 MB of RAM which can be upgraded to 64 MB and is fitted with 200 MHz processor. The driver allows the user to set various print configurations and set different functions such as overlay management, watermark and font. One can also control the usage of ink by selecting from 10 different tonal outputs. Innovative effects such as Negative and Smoothing can be used for graphics. The three supported print formats include Normal, Booklet and Poster.

There are two control buttons fitted at the top of the printer along with 5 LED's that depict readiness, status of P1500 printer toner cartridge, status of paper-tray, paper jams, and errors. The control buttons are placed where they can be easily reached while the LED's are good indicators for product malfunctioning if there is any. The input and output trays are located at the top and retract back to save space. The product has a user manual that explains all the necessary facts over 80 well designed pages. The front portion of the printer has a tray that is used for manually feeding papers.

The device can be used with both 3K and 6K cartridges, which cost $99 and $149 respectively. To save some money one can also opt to buy the use and return cartridges costing $75 and $115 for the 3K and 6K variants respectively. Coupling this printer with the powerful Dell P1500 compatible cartridge shows an amazing power to produce some of the best prints on the market today.

In a nutshell, the product is very well designed, packed with attractive features, priced aggressively and is backed with reliable technical support to make it a good buy. The one bone of contention may be the fact that it does not have a LCD display, but that can be easily overlooked if one looks at the other benefits including speed of operation, ease of installation and cost effectiveness. - 22787
