Computers And How They Have Changed Us

By Adam Huang

Everything we do on a daily basis has been altered by computers. Considering that computer have not been around for all that long, it is astounding to see the effects they have had on our society. It is easy to forget that not too long ago, many heads of businesses did not believe that computers would ever make their way into the mainstream. They couldn't have been more wrong.

It is not unusual today for many people to own not just one, but multiple computers. As if a desktop computer was not enough, we need a laptop, a computer in our phone and all sorts of other technology to help us along. What a difference to go from not really capturing the utility of a computer, to owning a few of them per household. Lots of us even claim they couldn't survive without them.

Now that everybody has their desktops and laptops, and we are all able to access the internet anytime we want to, our world has converted into a virtual playground. We can now connect with our foreign neighbors in a matter of seconds, regardless of how far away they are from us. It's as if we no longer have borders in this highly digital world of ours.

In the beginning, we had to sit down at our desktop computers to get online. While they were indeed able to connect to the internet and gain access to whatever we wanted, it was kind of a nuisance to be tied to that desk for our time spent on the computer. The benefits of desktops for businesses and home offices are undeniable, and you get a lot of capability for the money spent. It is also simpler to upgrade their parts.

It is a different story if someone can't afford to stay in one place while doing business. It is in this situation that laptop computers are necessary. If business requires you to travel and stay in communication the entire time, you need the convenience of a laptop. Additionally, there is now almost no excuse to not be connected to the internet no matter where you go since most major cities have wireless internet all over.

As laptop computers became the favored alternative for going portable, it became desirable to go more mobile with computers. Laptops became smaller and eventually kind of spawned PDA's. Although they don't resemble laptops or desktops, and don't have their computing power either, they are making good strides.

Trends continue to evolve, and now we see that everyone wants their phone merged into the same device as all their other gadgets. Many people only carry around one device because it has everything they need. Why carry a big laptop when everything it does can be found on a smaller device that fits in your pocket? These devices look like they will be the next big thing in technology.

Our society has been converted into one that has to have all the latest gadgets, no matter how impractical they really are. Some people even look down on others if they still have last year's model of some gadget. But those people will always be behind the curve just because of how fast technology is advancing now. It is a game no one can ever win, though many people like to try. - 22787
