Building Your Own Desktop PC

By Beau Allerton

While most consumers will be able to get by with a regular desktop PC, there are always those situations where building one on your own may be a better option. What are the reasons that someone would need to build their own? What are the benefits of doing so?

The truth is that there are certain situations where the only way a user can fit their special needs is to build a custom computer. The trick is that it isn't necessarily easy to do so. One thing is for sure though: it's easier to build a desktop than a laptop. But the benefit is that a user can really define what they need in their custom PC.

Desktop PCs are very modular and have uniform components, which allow users to easily find and install new units into the computer. This customizability also lets users design the computer that will cover their needs. Maybe consumer models don't have enough hard drive space. Perhaps a hardcore gamer can't find a preconfigured desktop PC that has the sound, graphics, and peripherals really needed to dominate the game. Or maybe the preconfigured models are just too much power for a casual Internet user. In all these situations, building a unique PC might be the answer.

Building a desktop PC from scratch begins with deciding on the processor that is needed. Will it be something simple like a dual-core processor, or will it be stepped up to a quad-core chip to really add some power? Next is the motherboard and memory. Finding the board that will be compatible with the processor and the memory is an important step. Everything will be attached to the motherboard, so it must be the right one for the user's needs, and it must also be able to accept future upgrades as well.

Drive space is also an important part of desktop construction. If the computer is going to be used for large video files, sound files, or other design programs, the computer must include a large enough hard drive. But if the computer is going to be a gaming system, the rpms might be the more important factor.

There are also other consideration you can make such as peripherals. What kind of monitor do you want to have? Do you need to have any other special drives or connections? All of these things need to be considered when you build your own computer.

There are a number of jobs that a standardized, consumer-model desktop can handle, but there will always be an occasion, whether in a company or a home setting, in which a specialized computer is necessary. - 22787
